OAU student builds solar powered car

Like I have always said, Nigerian students are no dull brains, they are only handicapped by the non-working atmosphere and condition created for them. Here is a solar-powered vehicle built by Oyeyiola Segun, a Part 5 student of the Electronic and Electrical Department of Obafemi Awolowo University.

In an exclusive interview by OAU Peeps Forum, he explained how the car came into existence and the motivations behind it.

OAU Peeps: Can we meet you sir?
Segun: Okay, I am Oyeyiola Segun, a part 5 student of Elect-Elect., OAU

OAU Peeps: We learnt you built this lovely car. Was it a joint project or you did it yourself?
Segun: I did it only. This is not a day’s job, I have been working on it for some months now.

OAU Peeps: So how does the car work?
Segun: Basically it depends on Wind and Solar energy. All the energy derived for these two sources were converted to run the simple car. There are different means of obtaining energy from these two sources but I picked the one that is cool for my car.

OAU Peeps: From what you just said, you can either use the Wind or Solar Energy to power the car’s engine?
Segun: Not either energy, rather both energies are used to power the car.

OAU Peeps: Cool… that differentiates your production from the usual vehicles we see around us I suppose?
Segun: Yes, you are very correct.

OAU Peeps: Could you share with us what actually provoked your innovation? I mean what you thought before coming up with this lovely engine?
Segun: Basically, it is because of the climate change we experience due to the combustion of fuel and you know cars also contribute to that change. So I thought of running a car that will not use fuel for its locomotion. After series of thinking and research work, I came up with the simple method that gave birth to this. So that is the basic reason for the car. Another concern of mine is to produce a car that will function effectively at a reduced cost of maintenance. I believe you know the price of fuel in this country is almost going beyond the reach of a common man?
OAU Peeps: Yes, you are right. Is there any other peculiarity of the car that you will like to share apart from the once you have mentioned?
Segun: Of course yes. Another thing that distinguishes my car from the common ones you see around is that you can know the state of the car through your mobile phones. I wrote a software that you can install which will give you the basic information about the car while in your room.

OAU Peeps: What do you mean by the State of the car?
Segun: I mean the functionality of the car, like the battery level, the weather conditions, the distance you can cover during different weather conditions. In case you have a bad weather. The car also has a GPS in it that helps to know the location of the car. These and many other features embedded in it.

OAU Peeps: Wow! this is very lovely. Do you have plans replicating this nice work in the future?
Segun: The work has come to stay, but I need to keep improving it for now.

OAU Peeps: It took you how many years to put this together?
Segun: That your question can be phased into two categories, do you mean mentally or physically?

OAU Peeps: Lol… you are right. Let us talk about the Physical aspect of it now.
Segun: Okay. We all know how our country is, I mean to get money is not easy but I pray that God will make it easy for everyone of us. The truth is, I cannot really say how long because I started using my personal little money to get the materials together. Let me just say about twelve(12) months.

OAU Peeps: Did you encounter any major challenge during this project?
Segun: Yes, Money. Even at the moment, I still need funds to get some others materials which are in my original paper design which I have not implemented on the car.

OAU Peeps: What will be the summarized cost of this car when fully ready?
Segun: There are lots of things that will lead to summary cost of production, so for now I cannot specifically state the cost but with all the materials that I will be needing since I am not producing in large quantities, its close to a million naira. Now quantifying my effect and others on foreseen cases.

OAU Peeps: Finally, your message to fellow Nigerian students?
Segun: My message to my fellow students is that Rome was not built in a day. It is better to start anything you want to do now and don’t never, I repeat, never expect someone to believe in your dreams because they may not understand it as you do. Endeavor to follow your heart and do what will make you happy and that which will not affect your fellow being negatively. May God help and bless us all.

La OTAN despierta de su letargo. Después de muchos años volcada en conflictos exteriores como el de Afganistán, la organización se moviliza para hacer frente a lo que considera la mayor amenaza para la seguridad mundial desde la caída del Muro de Berlín: el desafío ruso. Nunca desde entonces habían sentido los países aliados la presión en sus propias fronteras, una situación que devuelve a la Alianza Atlántica a sus orígenes, cuando el adversario era Moscú. Ante este nuevo escenario, la OTAN muestra sus garras, aunque le pesan los profundos recortes en defensa aplicados durante años, especialmente en Europa.La reprimenda que el presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, lanzó el miércoles en Bruselas sobre ese repliegue militar en el continente ha traído a primer plano un problema hasta ahora infravalorado.

Pese a la aparente calma desde la anexión de Crimea a Rusia, Occidente teme que el intento del presidente Vladímir Putin por ampliar su área de influencia no haya concluido. Descartada una intervención militar —Ucrania no es miembro de la Alianza Atlántica y Europa no tiene intención de embarcarse en una guerra—, los aliados engrasan la maquinaria para disuadir a Moscú de una nueva ofensiva a las puertas de la UE. Los ministros de Asuntos Exteriores de la organización se reunirán la próxima semana en Bruselas con una serie de propuestas sobre la mesa. “Van a tener que tomar muchas decisiones nuevas”, vaticina un portavoz de la organización. La subida de tono en la siempre medida retórica del secretario general de la Alianza, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, ofrece pistas sobre la nueva tesitura.

Los aliados no dejan de enviar aviones de combate a la región

La medida más relevante, aún por concretar, consistiría en desplegar tropas en los países del Este europeo, los más amenazados por cualquier ofensiva de Moscú. Además de su proximidad geográfica, algunos de esos Estados, en su día en la órbita soviética, cuentan con minorías rusófilas sobre las que Putin podría tratar de influir. Aunque la OTAN rehúsa concretar el volumen de esas hipotéticas tropas, sí aclara que se trataría de reasignar fuerzas desde los países más seguros hacia los más vulnerables.

Entretanto, los aliados no dejan de enviar aviones de combate para reforzar la seguridad de la región. Los seis F-16 aprobados ayer por Dinamarca se suman a otros ocho de Reino Unido y Francia, más casi una veintena estadounidenses. Desde hace dos semanas, varios aviones de vigilancia AWACS sobrevuelan Polonia y Rumanía para detectar cualquier anomalía. Las medidas resultan más cosméticas que eficaces, pero son una muestra del músculo que la OTAN está dispuesta a exhibir si atisba nuevos peligros. “Ya hemos hecho cosas en aviación; planeamos extenderlas al ámbito terrestre y al naval”, aseguró el miércoles Ben Rhodes, uno de los principales asesores de seguridad de Obama.

Esa nueva perspectiva supone una llamada de atención sobre el deterioro de las fuerzas militares aliadas en los últimos años. Los presupuestos de Defensa han experimentado importantes mermas, especialmente desde la crisis. La presidenta de Lituania, Dalia Grybauskaite, urgió este jueves a su país a duplicar con creces el presupuesto militar, ahora en el 0,8% del producto interior bruto (PIB). Sus declaraciones reflejan el sentir de muchos socios, especialmente los más próximos a Rusia.

Los presupuestos de Defensa han experimentado fuertes mermas

Los datos globales de la OTAN apenas recogen esa caída presupuestaria, principalmente porque llegan hasta 2010, y entonces la partida destinada al Ejército aún estaba en 3,3% del PIB, aunque en Europa no superaba el 1,7%. La evolución de las fuerzas armadas, en cambio, muestra más claramente el deterioro. De contar con casi seis millones de militares en 1990, los países aliados han pasado a tener 3,6 millones en 2010. Si el personal militar y civil de Defensa suponía entonces un 2,5% de la población activa, hoy representa el 1,1%. “Es verdad que la caída de los presupuestos es una preocupación y hace perder eficacia, pero la OTAN sigue siendo la mayor potencia militar del mundo”, argumenta el portavoz.

Más que un alza inmediata de las partidas de Defensa, algunos expertos prevén mayor colaboración entre Estados. “En los países más cercanos se puede producir una ligera subida, pero lo que más veremos es cooperación entre los países de Europa central, los nórdicos o los bálticos”, abunda Vivien Pertusot, experto del laboratorio de ideas Ifri.

Junto a las medidas de refuerzo, los ministros analizarán la próxima semana el futuro de las relaciones entre la OTAN y Rusia. Desde que un tratado de 1997 certificó el fin de las hostilidades, ambos bloques cooperan en asuntos militares e incluso Moscú cuenta con un embajador ante la Alianza Atlántica. “Los ministros podrían decidir suspender el diálogo, pero a medio plazo, Rusia es un socio muy poderoso y lo mejor que se puede hacer no es aislarlo”, sugiere el analista de Ifri.

Los tesoros de Crimea: Sin pasaje de vuelta de Amsterdam a Simferópol

El Museo Central de la Táurida de Simferópol guarda la memoria histórica de Crimea. Sus tesoros son inmensos. Griegos, romanos, sármatas, escitas, alanos, godos, venecianos, genoveses, tribus túrquicas son algunos de los pueblos que llegaron a esta península. Sus huellas, superpuestas, mezcladas, disueltas están aquí y lo que persiste dibuja el contorno de lo que se evaporó.

Especialmente fascinante es el legado de los godos, que, en parte, se encuentra custodiado en la “cámara del tesoro”, una habitación aislada, protegida por alarmas, rejas y un guarda que sabe saludar en alemán. Los godos llegaron a Crimea en la segunda mitad del siglo III de nuestra era, desde el norte, dice el guía mientras visito esta sección selecta permanente del museo, que existe gracias a Vasili Dzharti, que fue primer ministro de Crimea desde marzo de 2010 hasta su muerte en 2011. Dzhartí fue uno de los representantes del “grupo de Donetsk” que “desembarcó” en Crimea cuando ´Víctor Yanukóvich, oriundo de aquella región, llegó al poder en Ucrania. En el Museo Central de la Taurida de Simferópol, están agradecidos a Dzhartí porque nadie antes que él hizo posible reunir los tesoros de los godos en una sección especial.

De los godos, unos se quedaron en la península y los otros se fueron a conquistar el Imperio Romano. En Crimea se sumergieron en un entorno donde había elementos de cultura alana, sármata y de la Roma tardía. De nómadas pasaron a sedentarios. En el siglo VI, el emperador Justiniano les pagaba para que custodiaran los confines de Bizancio. Con las monedas de oro que recibían fabricaban objetos suntuarios y hebillas, entre ellas esas hebillas en forma de cabeza de águila que son el símbolo de Crimea, y que abundan en este museo fabricadas en distintos metales. Los godos se asimilaron o desaparecieron, dice el guía. La última mención sobre ellos, confirma el director del museo Andréi Malguín, figura en las cartas en latín escritas por Ogier Ghislen de Busbecq, embajador del imperio de los Habsburgo en la corte de Suleimán el Magnífico en Constantinopla, entre 1555 y 1562. En Constantinopla, en su condición de diplomático y rehén a la vez, Ghislen de Busbecq se entrevistó con dos oriundos de Crimea, que por entonces estaba en la órbita del imperio Otomano,y les interrogó sobre la lengua de los godos, de ellos todavía conocían. Después el diplomático hizo una lista de términos, palabras germánicas que son fáciles de identificar.

En la Segunda Guerra Mundial, durante la ocupación nazi de Crimea, los alemanes querían llamarla Gotteland. Hitler estuvo de acuerdo en que Sinferópol se llamara Gottenburg y Sebastopol, Teodorishafen, según dice Malguin. El director del museo está preparando una exposición de fotografías sobre los 30 días que, entre febrero y marzo, han sacudido a Crimea y al mundo.

Malguín confía en que sea posible inaugurar en mayo una exposición sobre los judios de Crimea, que ha sido organizada con una beca de la fundación Rotschild. Tal vez estos proyectos le ayuden a superar algunas realidades dolorosas.

Algunos de los grandes tesoros culturales de la península pueden no regresar a ella debido a la anexión rusa. Son los objetos de la exposición “Los Tesoros de Crimea. El Oro y los Secretos del Mar Negro”, que,desde el 8 de febrero se exhibe el museo arqueológico Allard Pierson de Amsterdam.

La exposición fue organizada por el fondo museístico de Ucrania y consta de cerca de mil objetos, de los cuales unos 300 pertenecen al museo de la Taurida, entre ellos la hebilla goda en forma de águila que es el símbolo del museo, una coraza de bronce de los escitas y cerámicas. Otros objetos pertenecen al museo de Bachjisarái (centro de la cultura tártara y también de excavaciones bizantinas), como una caja de laca china del siglo segundo, y al museo de Kerch.

El destino de las piezas que salieron de Ucrania se plantea ya como problema entre Ucrania y Rusia, mucho antes de que la exposición, que estuvo antes en Alemania, se clausure a fines de agosto. “En el museo Allard Pierson nos han dicho quieren resolverlo con la máxima corrección”, dice Malguin. Mientras tanto,los amantes del arte de Europa tienen en Amsterdam una ocasión fantástica de familiarizarse con los pueblos y culturas de Crimea.

Astronomers Surprised to Find Asteroid With Rings

For the first time ever, astronomers have discovered a ring system surrounding an asteroid. The finding is a complete surprise to planetary scientists, who are yet unsure exactly how such rings could have formed.

The cosmic bling was found around an object named Chariklo, which orbits in a region between Saturn and Uranus. At 155 miles across, or about the length of Massachusetts, Chariklo is the largest known asteroid in its neighborhood. Looking to get a better idea of its exact size and shape, astronomers trained their telescopes on the giant space rock as it passed in front on a distant star in June 2013. As Chariklo performed its eclipse, researchers noticed something odd: The star’s light flickered just a bit immediately before and after Chariklo’s pass.

The reason for this darkening was the asteroid’s two dense rings, which had briefly blocked the starlight. The thicker inner ring is about four miles wide, while the thinner outer ring is a little less than two miles. Spectroscopic analysis of the starlight also revealed that the rings are composed partially of water ice.

The ice rings reflect light like a mirror, a property that helps explain an earlier anomalous finding regarding Chariklo. After the asteroid was discovered in 1997, its brightness mysteriously dropped off and only came back again in 2008. What apparently happened was that, as Chariklo moved through its orbit, its ring system turned edge-on when viewed from Earth. As they turned back to face us with their flat side, they reflected light toward our planet and Chariklo’s brightness grew by 40 percent.

There are only four other known ring systems in our solar system — around Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and, most dramatically, Saturn — and all the other ones have formed around planets. Astronomers aren’t yet sure if Chariklo’s ring system makes it unique among asteroids. In recent decades, more than 10 other objects in its neighborhood have been searched using a technique similar to Chariklo’s stellar eclipse but have not shown any rings.

The asteroid’s rings might have formed when another slightly smaller object slammed into its surface, kicking up a huge amount of debris that settled into rings held in place by gravity. Alternatively, Chariklo could have a tiny companion asteroid orbiting around it. Micrometeorite impacts on the tiny companion’s surface might dislodge fragments that turned into a ring around Chariklo.

Thin rings around an object will tend to spread out, making their edges fuzzy. Chariklo’s rings appear to have very sharp edges, which might indicate that they contain itty-bitty shepherd moons — just a few miles wide — whose gravitational influence pries open the lane between the two rings and confines their edges. Such shepherd moon are how planets like Uranus keep their thin rings so sharp. But many-ringed Saturn also has a few very thin rings that aren’t maintained by shepherd moons, suggesting that this explanation could turn out to be wrong. Perhaps studying Chariklo’s simple ring system further could help astronomers understand the behavior of larger rings in the solar system.
