INDIAN MOTORCYCLE UNVEILS ONE-OF-A-KIND ‘BIG CHIEF CUSTOM’ TO HIGHLIGHT CUSTOMIZATION POSSIBILITIES FOR 2014 INDIAN CHIEFS

Built around the Indian Chief Classic and designed by the Polaris Industries Industrial Design team, the “Big Chief Custom” showcases Indian Motorcycle accessories lineup and advanced paint technology
  Custom Built Big Chief
NEW YORK, NY - December 16, 2013 - Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced that it unveiled a fully customized, one-of-a-kind Indian Chief Classic on the floor of the International Motorcycle Show in New York City on Friday, December 13. Conceptualized and designed by Indian Motorcycle’s Industrial Design team, the “Big Chief Custom” is the first custom Indian Chief created around the 2014 models introduced with great fanfare at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this past August.
Spearheaded by the head of Polaris Industries’ Industrial Design team, Greg Brew, a small and dedicated team undertook the task of customizing a stock 2014 Indian Chief Classic, incorporating an array of Genuine Indian Motorcycle aftermarket accessories along with a stylish custom paint scheme and a custom billet girder front fork that showcases both the design and the technological innovation that are inherent to the Industrial Design team. This Big Chief Custom was designed and built to showcase the almost limitless possibilities for customers to customize, enhance and personalize the 2014 Indian Chief lineup utilizing authentic Indian Motorcycle Accessories, a custom paint shop, or by turning to a custom fabricator. The possibilities are endless for these powerful and awe-inspiring bikes.
“One of the coolest things about being a manager at Polaris, is that we get keys to the products we build,” says Brew. “I didn’t even get a chance to log one mile on my bike before our motorcycle design team, led by Michael Song, started tearing it apart to build a custom version. The team from the Indian accessories group offered up their entire line of 2014 gear and the design for the Big Chief Custom just started to come together from there.”
One special highlight of the custom build is the billet aluminum girder front end that harkens back to the Springfield Era Indian models. Fully designed, machined and built in-house, the girder forks feature fully machined uprights and cross members along with a custom 23-inch front wheel draped with a custom front fender that maintains the classic valanced fender look of the Chief. A custom shock and headlight complete the package. Custom paint designed and expertly applied in-house by team member Steve Leszinski expands on the multicolored theme from prior generations of Indian Motorcycles, with the addition of modern styling and state-of-the-art paint technology.
Another nod to the long history of Indian Motorcycle is a conversion to a springer style seat. The seat creates the look of floating above the rear fender, which was common before Indian Motorcycle developed the first motorcycle rear suspension in 1939 to cope with the rugged roads of that bygone era. Combined with the modern day single shock hidden under the rear fender, the Big Chief Custom promises to be a smooth, comfortable ride.
An extensive array of accessories were added, helping to complete the look of the bike. The “Pinnacle Series” of accessories was highlighted with items such as the Pinnacle Cam Cover, Pinnacle Primary Cover, chrome Pinnacle Grips on Beach Bars mated up with a Stage 1 exhaust sporting Fish Tail Tips. Other custom accessories include War Bonnet Floorboard Pads, a Heel Shifter, and a chrome Rear Fender Bumper.
The “Big Chief Custom” will be on display in the Indian Motorcycle exhibit as part of the 2014 International Motorcycle Shows tour. Remaining tour stops include by Novi, Michigan; Washington, DC; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Cleveland, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois; and Seattle, Washington. For more information on tour dates and tickets visit www.motorcycleshows.com. The Display features the 2014 line-up of Indian Chief motorcycles including the Chief Classic, Chief Vintage and the Chieftain — Indians’ first-ever bagger. The display also includes the Spirit of Munro, a custom tribute to the legendary Burt Munro, and a display of vintage Indian motorcycles dubbed “Springfield Row” that will change from show to show. Additional features include an accessory and apparel display, a cut-away Thunder Stroke 111 engine and a rolling chassis that showcases the advanced technology underpinning all Indian Motorcycle models.
